Reception Desk for Shelter the homeless charity.

A simple white reception desk has been installed at a new office for Shelter, the housing charity, in London EC1. This reception desk sits on a raised access floor, unlike the main reception space which is at ground level, making the height too tall for wheelchair bound visitors. As the office is designed for easy access the reception desk has been made with a significantly lowered sign-in surface, which also works well for parcel deliveries.

The clean and modern desk was made slightly oversized and then scribed to fit exactly to the opening. A return worksurface is used for a printer, and underneath is a pigeonhole unit for post sorting.

Whilst the brief from Shelter was for a cost-effective reception desk the finished appearance is nicely integrated into the reception area and doesn’t compete with the feature backdrop wall. Built-in reception desks fitted to the precise space involve careful surveying and extra work in the design process to ensure both accurate fit, and effective layout.

A built-in desk needs to be correct right from the start. When we send the desk to site with the specialist fitters there’s only a limited amount of scribing that can be done. During the production design we work with the factory to build-in some tolerance to the panels so that the on-site works have some material that can be trimmed off to allow for anything that’s not square.

Our design service will include all the cable management and power needs to ensure the desk is both tidy and practical. Core to the design is an ergonomic layout so that every desk is good to use as a workstation as well as providing the reception point.
